Her Mother Died of Breast Cancer. She Built a Tool to Help Others Detect It Early

When Nura Ahmad was a teenager, her mother died of an aggressive form of breast cancer. A decade later, Nura didn’t become a doctor or a scientist—she became an engineer. And she built a device that could help save thousands of women from the same fate. This is a story not just of technology, but of humanity, loss, dignity, and science born out of personal pain.


Origins: Fear, Silence, and Personal Loss


Nura was 15 when her mother Farida, a 41-year-old teacher from Pakistan, began experiencing breast pain. But in a culture where women's bodies are rarely discussed openly, Farida delayed seeing a doctor. Six months later, when she finally sought medical attention, the cancer had already reached stage four. She died within a year.


After the tragedy, Nura’s family emigrated to Canada. While studying engineering, Nura asked herself: could a technology be created to allow women to screen themselves—in a safe, stigma-free environment, without fear or shame?


An Engineering Solution With a Mission


In 2023, as a machine learning engineer, Nura introduced “Sadaf”—a portable, low-cost, non-invasive device for breast screening. It works by:

  • detecting heat-based anomalies in blood flow through thermal sensors;


  • analyzing data patterns using AI;


  • delivering simple feedback: "normal" or "screening recommended."


The whole process takes five minutes, requires no disrobing in front of medical staff, and can be done at home. The name "Sadaf"—Arabic for “pearl”—is both a cultural tribute and a symbol of feminine strength.


The Social Context: Confronting Structural Barriers


Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. According to the WHO, over 2.3 million women were diagnosed in 2022, and more than 600,000 died. Early screening saves lives, but in many parts of the world:


  • women lack access to mammography;


  • feel shame or fear around medical exams;


  • face stigma during routine procedures.


Sadaf aims to change that. At under $100, the device is accessible to wide populations. It runs on a smartphone or power bank, and returns agency to the woman over her own health.





Testing and Validation: Science, Not Wishful Thinking


After Sadaf’s initial presentation in Delhi, the medical community reacted with skepticism. Critics pointed out it was no substitute for mammography. Nura didn’t argue—she acted. Clinical trials were launched in three countries: India, Kenya, and Turkey.

The results:

  • 84% accuracy in detecting suspicious changes;


  • no false negatives when cancer was present;


  • high user satisfaction, especially regarding comfort and psychological safety.


Sadaf doesn’t replace a doctor—it serves as an early alert for those who might otherwise never reach a clinic.


From Prototype to Global Impact


Sadaf wasn’t funded by corporations. It’s a result of a woman’s engineering initiative. Today, the device:


  • is registered as a Class I medical device in Canada and India;


  • is undergoing CE certification for use in the European Union;


  • is being used in clinical partnerships in Rwanda, Mexico, and Bangladesh.


In 2024, TIME magazine named Sadaf one of the “100 Innovations of the Year.”


Looking Ahead: Ambition and Expansion


Nura’s team is working on new features:

  • dynamic in-app monitoring of changes over time;


  • anonymous data sharing with doctors, without clinic visits;


  • a version tailored for men, who can also develop breast cancer, albeit less frequently.


The ultimate goal? Integration into adolescent health education:

“Imagine if breast screening became routine for 16-year-old girls—just like a vision test or a vaccination. No shame. No pain. Just a habit. That could save millions.”


Conclusion: Technology as an Expression of Love


When Nura speaks about her mother, her voice softens:

“I couldn’t save her. But maybe through me, she will save others.”
